Pioneering a revolutionary 3D scanning technology shaped for service to the metals industry, Danieli Service directly translates real-life physical objects into precise CAD models at the client’s site, with great savings in execution time and logistics, and also achieving greater accuracy.

Danieli Service replaced an upcoiler mandrel at the hot-strip mill of Maghreb Steel in Casablanca, Morocco, with the specific requirement to maintain identical dimensions and kinematics.

The new 3D scanning capability allowed the Danieli Service specialized team to perform a complete technical survey of the mandrel at the customer site, avoiding international logistics and delays.

The results yielded hundredth-of-a-millimeter measurements and detected a 4-mm deformation on the 5-m long shaft with the new 3D scanning system; an accuracy impossible to be achieved by hand.

From the recovered measurements, mandrel designers performed reverse engineering to re-establish the machine’s original dimensions while improving the mandrel’s functionality and duration, according to the latest available technologies but maintaining the initial overall shape.

The whole activity at Maghreb Steel did not require any modification to the existing on-site equipment –neither automation nor hydraulic interconnections.
